There are several IDEs and tools used to develop interactive fictions, and more specifically visual novels. I have been experimenting for a while with RenPY, a Python-based environment. With RenPY one can make games for Mac, Windows, Linux and Android, which is great. Many of those games are then release on Itch.io or Steam.
Here are a few examples of small games developed by other people with RenPY:
- Someone Stole My Lunch puts you in the position of an employee with a lunchbox problem
- (Don’t) Open Your Eyes is about nightmares and monsters under a bed
- The Still Dancer require you to help a mechanical ballerina finding her memories again.
